Yes, I’m a Nexus One owner now…

Android Froyo FRF72 leaked

First of all, I’d like to announce that I’m a Google Nexus One owner now. Yes, I finally made it after coding several apps on the android emulator only – which was pretty cool, but unfortunately it does not give you a real feeling how your apps looks/behaves like on a real device. Also, my Nokia e51 has done a great job, but it was about time to move on with a new gadget. I bought the device on ebay together with a 16 GB SanDisk microSD card, so I got everything I needed to get going. Two days later the device arrived and due to the fact that I had prepared myself for that day, by reading several tutorials and websites about custom ROMs, rooting and unlocking, it did not take long until the phone was unlocked rooted and flashed with a custom ROM (that’s why I love android!). There are three custom ROMs that I’ve been evaluating: Cyanogen 5.0.8 (with the 720p Video hack), Modaco r22.1 or stock Froyo. I started with Froyo (Build FRF50) and it has been so great that I kept that ROM on my device – if you need a turorial on how to install Froyo, check this link. I’ve never tried the other ones. So what I’m going to do now is to wait until Google releases the source code for Froyo and will then upgrade to Cyanogen 6, which will be based on Froyo and will include Cyanogen’s features. Today another Froyo build has been found in the world wide web (FRF72) and I’ve already upgraded today… but I did not see any significant changes.

Yesterday I had the pleasure to attend the DroidCamp Stuttgart. It was one of the best events I’ve ever attended as it was completely free of charge, but came with free food (breakfast, lunch, coffee, sweets,…), a nice DroidCamp polo shirt, a tombola and a lot of great sessions about Android and its possibilities. My phone was also part of a new Blinkendroid world record (the former world record was 38 devices – we had 51):

The twitter hashtag for that event was “#dcs2010″, just in case you want to read the tweets. I’d like to thank the DroidCamp Stuttgart crew for their engagement and also all the sponsors and can’t wait to attend next year’s DroidCamp.

Twitter/facebook updates now available on mastixmc.de

Now that I own a more advanced cell phone (with a better social network integration), I’ve decided to do something that I wanted to do for a long time: I hooked up twitter with facebook in order to see my tweets as facebook postings as well. I’ve not been using twitter a lot, because I had no use case, but now, with my Nexus One, I will twitter moreoften – so if you want to follow me, click here: mastixmc@twitter. I’ve tried several twitter apps for android (also the official one that came pre-installed with Froyo) and I got stuck with Seesmic. The reason why I didn’t use the pre-installed twitter app is the inconsistency of the retweet feature – for some reason the retweet button’s missing in the “By others” retweet timeline, mentions timeline, nearby tweets timeline or search results; the other apps have no such limitation – Hopefully this gets fixed soon, because then I’m going to stick with the official Twitter app. Now that I’m using twitter more often, I’ve added a twitter widget to this page, which will display all tweets containing #mastixmc.

Upgraded WordPress to version 3.0

Last but not least there’s another interesting information: I’ve used the auto-upgrade feature of WordPress to upgrade to WordPress 3.0 and it worked like a charm. Of course I created backups of the database as well as of the folders WordPress resides in before, but it turns out that it wasn’t necessary because everything has been updated perfectly. Great job guys.

due to the lack of time, I will not be able to continue the development of Android AIRMail anymore.

A new project at work, that I am working on at the moment, takes way too much time, so I won’t be able to support this application anymore. And as you may imagine – this project that I’m working on is actually something that I can make money with, so I had to make a decision. It really makes me sad, because I really loved this app and I put a lot of energy and brain power into it. Due to the fact O2Online does not provide any public API (e.g. a REST Service interface or something like), I will not be able to update the application as soon as the website design changes.

But Android AIRMail will not just go down the drain:

I will donate the code to Felix Bechstein, who is the developer of WebSMS (http://code.google.com/p/websmsdroid). He will use this code to implement all features that are not available at the moment. So almost nothing will change for you – but the application name. You just need to install WebSMS. The big advantage of WebSMS is the fact that you can send sms messages via other providers, too. I will ask Felix if it is possible to disable the ads for everyone that has donated money to Android AIRMail.

Android AIRMail will soon disappear from the Android Market (probably in the next 2-3 weeks). But before that, a new update will inform everyone about this big change.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but there was no other way out.

Hello new website: Yes, this blog post wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the year 2009. Yeah on August 5th I wrote my first blog post here on my new website. Yes – this summer I’ve moved from a static “offline CMS” called Rapidweaver to an “online CMS” called WordPress, with a new design and new features. This new content management system now helps me to keep the website more up-to-date and of course to edit it from almost everywhere. Android AIRMail released: The weather was getting darker and colder because the autumn was about to show its dirty face (I’m kind of a summer guy), so I’ve decided to spend these uncomfortable evenings coding a new application for Android mobile phones. As you might already know, software development is my hobby, which is why I thought that it would be a fair compensation for the bad weather outside. Android AIRMail became pretty successful for a German App that only O2 customers can use. The current version is Android AIRMail v0.67 – it’s still free of charge and still beta, but will become final next year.

Android AIRMAil has been tested by AndroidPIT (German):

„Android AIRMail“ macht genau das, was es soll – und das sogar sehr gut. Interface und Bedienung sind schlicht, dafür effektiv und selbsterklärend. Die Applikation kann damit getrost als „Must-Have-App“ eingestuft werden, zumindest für o2-Nutzer mit gebuchter Internetoption.

Download Android Airmail

As this is an application for German O2 customers, I will post this entry in German only.

Pünktlich zur Weihnachtszeit wurde die neue Version von Android AIRMail im Google Android Market veröffentlicht. Bevor wir zu den Features kommen würde ich gerne ein paar Statistiken zeigen, bei denen es sich lohnt diese zu euch zu präsentieren. Android AIRMail wurde bis jetzt ca. 900 Mal heruntergeladen (Stand Dezember 2009) und von 72 Usern mit 4.87/5 Punkten bewertet. AndroLib berechnet hierraus verschiedene Statistiken, die als Basis die Nutzerbewertungen heranzieht. Auch die Bewertungen sind dort nachzulesen, ein Feature was der Android Market im Web leider nicht bietet – Richtig: Ich kann als Entwickler im Android Market nicht sehen, welche Bewertungen abgegeben wurden, ich sehe nur die Anzahl und die “Sterne”. Durch die Bewertungen ergibt sich jedenfalls folgende Zufriedenheitsstatistik (auf AndroLib können natürlich auch noch weitere Statistiken eingesehen werden – leider sind die Daten nicht immer aktuell):

Nach den ganzen Lorbeeren kommen wir mal zu den Neuigkeiten, die Android AIRMail in v.064 bietet – denn es kam sehr viel Neues dazu. Ich werde die zwei größten Änderungen zuerst separat aufführen.

O2 AIRMail heißt jetzt Android AIRMAIL: Der Grund hierfür ist ganz einfach, denn bezog sich das O2 im Applikationsnamen zwar nur auf die chemische Summenformel O2 (Oxygenium – Sauerstoff), könnte sich O2 (Mobilfunkprovider) jedoch hier gestört fühlen, da hier unter Umständen ein Bezug auf das Unternehmen hergestellt werden könnte – was ja auch verständlich ist. Um hier auf Nummer Sicher zu gehen und abzugrenzen, dass diese Applikation nicht von O2 kommt und auch damit nichts zu tun hat, habe ich mich entschieden den Namen der Applikation zu ändern.

Android AIRMail ist keine Open Source Software mehr: Wie viele von euch wissen, wurde diese Applikation früher unter der GPL V3 Lizenz veröffentlicht. Nach langen Diskussionen bezüglich eines Approvals von unseren Intellectual Property Attorneys bei meinem Arbeitgeber, haben wir uns auf verschiedene Richtlinien geeinigt, damit ich diese Applikation weiter entwickeln darf. Eine der Regulierungen war das Umstellen auf eine Closed Source Applikation. Das heißt natürlich nicht, dass Android AIRMail in Zukunft Geld kosten wird – Nein, sie wird weiterhin kostenlos bleiben – nur der Source Code wird nicht mehr öffentlich zur Verfügung gestellt. Ich hatte leider keine andere Möglichkeit und einstellen wollte ich das Projekt nicht.

Weitere neue Features von Android AIRMail v0.64:

SMS werden nun im Hintergrund versendet: Dieses Feature wird viele Nutzer freuen, die oft mit GPRS/EDGE unterwegs sind. Durch dieses Feature bleibt Android AIRMail auch während des Sendens einer SMS (egal wie lange das auch dauert) komplett nutzbar. Die App kann sogar in den Hintergrund geschoben werden – die SMS werden trotzdem versendet.

Auto Login hinzugefügt: Das Auto Login Feature richtet sich auch an die GPRS/EDGE Nutzer, denn dieses spart enorm viel Zeit beim Versenden einer SMS und kommt gleich mit zwei schönen Vorteilen. Zum Einen kann nun eingestellt werden, dass sich O2 Airmail beim Start automatisch im Hintergrund einlogged (Einstellungsmenü). Dieses Feature erlaubt es demnach, dass der Login-Vorgang bereits schon während dem Tippen der SMS im Hintergrund stattfindet. Zum Anderen logged sich Android AIRMail nun nur einmal pro Session ein. Dies bedeutet deutlich weniger genutze Bandbreite – im Vergleich zur Version v0.54 – hier fand der Login beim Senden jeder SMS statt.

Informationen werden nun über Notifications angezeigt: Da sich nun viel in den Hintergrund verlagert hat, wird nun das Notification Framework von Android benutzt. Hier werden alle Informationen rund um Android AIRMail angezeigt (Login, Fehler, Versendete SMS). Hier kann nun im Einstellungsmenü eingestellt werden, ob sich die Nachrichten dort sammeln sollen, oder ob eine neue Nachricht die andere ersetzen soll. Bei einem Klick auf die Notification öffnet sich nun Android AIRMail und zeigt die Information an.

SMS direkt aus dem Android Telefonbuch versenden: Android AIRMail bietet nun die Möglichkeit, dass man direkt über das Telefonbuch eine SMS senden kann. Dies sollte nicht mit dem Telefonbuch Feature der vorigen Versionen verwechselt werden, denn nun geht man einfach in die Android Kontakteapplikation und klickt auf einen Kontakt. Dort besteht nun die Möglichkeit eine SMS über Android AIRMail zu versenden. Die Nummer wird dann bei Android AIRMail automatisch in das Rufnummernfeld eingetragen.

Smilies in die SMS-Nachricht einfügen: Mit Android AIRMail v0.64 wurden nun auch neue Schaltflächen eingeführt. Eine davon ist der Smilies-Button. Dieser erlaubt es aus einer Liste Smilies auszuwählen und diese in das Textfeld einzufügen. Dies passiert genau an der Stelle, an der der Cursor steht. Dieses Feature macht dann sehr viel Sinn, wenn man eine Hardware-Tastatur hat, so kann man schnell einen neuen Smiley hinzufügen ohne ihn über die Tastatur eingeben zu müssen.

SMS können nun geplant werden: Dies ist nun der letzte verbleibende Service von O2. Nachrichten können nun geplant werden, in dem man das Datum und die Uhrzeit wann die SMS gesendet werden soll angibt. Dies ist zum Beispiel nicht schlecht, wenn man Geburtstage leicht vergisst. So kann man vorab schonmal gratulieren. Die SMS wird automatisch bei O2 gespeichert und dann rechtzeitig versendet. Android AIRMail teilt dies mit, in dem es beim Status zwischen Versenden und Planen unterscheidet.

Das Android AIRMail Icon hat sich geändert: Da Android 2.1 in aller Munde ist und sich seit Android 2.0 auch die Icons der Platform geändert haben (vorher eher im 3D-Stil – jetzt eher flach), habe ich auch das Icon von Android AIRMail geändert, so dass dies besser ins Menü passt.

Rufnummernfilter zeigt nun nur noch Handynummern: Vorher war es immer recht anstrengend die korrekte Rufnummer im Telefonbuch zu finden, wenn man mehrere Kontakte mit mehreren Rufnummern hatte. Nun kann man über das Einstellungsmenü einen Rufnummernfilter aktivieren, der nur die Mobilnummern anzeigen lässt.

Weitere kleine Änderungen: Die Applikation wurde erfolgreich auf dem Android Emulator mit Android 2.0 getestet, d.h. auch höhere Auflösungen (wie zum Beispiel das Motorola Droid es momentan hat), werden unterstützt. Der About Screen (Menü – Informationen) wurde auch aufgewertet und bietet nun auch die Möglichkeit für die Applikation zu spenden. Durch die vielen neuen Funktionen wurde auch das Hilfe-Menü erweitert und die einzelnen Funktionen erklärt. Neben den verschiedenen neuen Möglichkeiten, die Android AIRMail nun bietet, gab es natürlich auch viele Fehler, die behoben wurden.

UPDATE: Bugfixes seit v0.64 (aktuell: v0.67):

* T9 funktioniert auf dem Hero wieder
* Session Timeout Bug gelöst, bei dem SMS nicht versendet werden
* Auto-Login checkt nun, ob Session noch besteht oder nicht und logged sich dann automatisch wieder ein
* Neue Sektion im Hilfe Dialog -> Zeigt nun die Änderungen in den Versionen an
* Telefonnummer die mit “0049″ beginnen werden nun richtig zusammengebaut und demnach auch korrekt versendet.

Dieses Projekt verschlingt sehr viel Zeit und Geld (Server hosting, Android Market Gebühr & Freizeit), weshalb ich nochmal auf das Spendenformular hinweisen möchte:

Android Market on the Emulator

Yesterday, I’ve tried to find a way to install a firmware with closed source apps on my Android 1.6 emulator. And let me explain why I did it and of course how.

I wanted to have a look at the Android Speech Recognizer API (RecognizerIntent) and was really impressed by the fact that there are only a few lines of code needed to use this feature. But after some digging, I found out that you would need an application on your device to take care of the speech analysis. Only with this app, you’ll be able to use this feature – and yes – there’s no app packaged with the emulator to provide that. The only application I knew was Google Voice… but: Google Voice is closed source and therefore not installed on the emulator. I had to find a way to get it somehow… Android Market? No, closed source -> not available.

So I made up my mind and remembered that someone told me once that the firmware images on the phone and on the emulator are pretty much the same. I’ve checked the AVD (Emulator = AVD = Android Virtual Device) folder to see how it stores its files… and yes, there were *.img files. If you don’t have such a directory, you need to create an Android 1.6 AVD first (you can use eclipse or command line) – I’ve created an AVD with a 1024MB sized SDCard.

You will find this directory in your home folder (e.g. on Linux/Mac):

~/.android/avd/MastiX_Donut.avd/

On HTC’s developer website they offer the Android Dev Phone Firmware (ADP1) to download… So I’ve downloaded the following file:

I’ve tried the ION firmware (signed-google_ion-img-14721.zip) as well, but I was not able to get an internet connection. Link seems not work with Firefox (Ubuntu) and Chrome (Mac). But I can download it successfully using Safari 4 on my Macbook. Please try this. The problem is that you have to accept a license agreement, which is why I don’t want to/can’t provide that file. Maybe you need to install Safari 4 to download the files… could someone tell me if it worked with Safari 4 on Windows?

Edit: I’ve found a link that should work – BUT PLEASE READ THE LICENSE AGREEMENT ON HTC’s DEVELOPER SITE BEFORE DOWNLOADING THIS FILE.

Ok, let’s continue… After extracting the downloaded file I was able to see that there’s a system.img file in there. This system.img did not exist in my current AVD folder, but I could see that it existed in the SDK folder:

./Development/android-sdk-linux_x86-1.6_r1/platforms/android-1.6/images/system.img

Fortunately the AVD itself supersedes this AVD-wide SDK setting as soon as it includes its own system.img file. The trick is to just copy the system.img file into the MastiX_Donut.avd folder. After that I’ve (of course) tried to run the emulator with the new firmware, but unfortunately it failed with the following exception:

emulator: ERROR: system image file too large for device's hardware configuration (78MB > 72MB)

This error is pretty easy to fix, you just need to put the following line into the AVD config file (.android/avd/MastiX_Donut.avd/config.ini):

disk.systemPartition.size=96MB

That’s it! I’ve started the emulator and after a quick boot sequence it forced me to enter my Google account credentials… (you need to switch to landscape mode to enter them – on a Macbook it would be Fn + Ctrl + F12!).

Now I was able to download Google Voice from the market and tested the speech stuff without any problems. It also synced my Google contacts to my emulator. Of course, I deleted the firmware after my test phase and returned to the standard emulator ROM!

Download O2 Airmail

As this is an application for German O2 customers, I will post this entry in German only.

Seit heute findet ihr die neue Version von O2 Airmail auf dem Android Market.  Bisher wurde das Tool ca. 160 Mal aus dem Android Market heruntergeladen und nochmal über 100 Mal von der Projektseite – nicht schlecht für ein Tool was noch keinen Monat alt ist. Des Weiteren hat O2 AIRMail auf dem Market eine durchschnittliche Bewertung von 4.93/5 Sternen bei 15 Bewertungen (Stand: 08/10/2009 – 22:30 Uhr).

Update: Auf Grund eines Bugs in v0.53, der so wie es aussieht nur auf einem echten Device auftritt, wurde gestern noch schnell Version 0.54 released (Titel wurde bereits angepasst).  Der Bug, verhinderte bei einigen Usern das Senden der SMS. Dieser wurde nun behoben. Des Weiteren stieg nach dem Update auch die Downloadzahl aus dem Market an, wo wir nun bei 217 Downloads sind (Stand 10/10/09 – 14:30 Uhr).

Mit dem neuen Update, werden sich die Werte hoffentlich noch ein bisschen bessern, denn endlich ist auch ein Feature drin, was sich viele gewünscht haben: O2 AIRMail speichert nun die SMS nach dem Versand auf dem Telefon als “Gesendete SMS”. Doch was bringt das? Ganz einfach, wer nun Fremdapplikationen wie ChompSMS nutzt, sieht nun die über O2 AIRMail gesendete SMS in seiner alltäglichen SMS-Kommunikation. Alle Nutzer der App, werden nun über den Market über ein Update informiert werden.

Hier mal eine Zusammenfassung was mit dem Update auf O2 AIRMail v0.53 alles dazu kam:

• O2 AIRMail ist nun keine ALPHA mehr, sondern wurde mit 0.5 eine BETA, da die Grundfunktionen nun implementiert sind
• Gesendete SMS werden nun auf dem Telefon gespeichert
• Ein neues Hilfe-Menü erklärt nun grundsätzliche Funktionen
• Das Einstellungen-Menü wurde komplett umgebaut und spart nun eine Oberfläche und ist ressourcenschohnender
• Es können nun verschiedene Verhaltensweisen der Applikation über das Einstellungsmenü eingestellt werden
• Die Masterpasswort- und auch die Benutzernamen/Passwort-Oberfläche wurde komplett entfernt
• Das Masterpasswort wird nun nicht mehr zum Start benötigt, nur noch für den Einstellungs-Dialog
• Hat man keine freien SMS mehr oder überschreitet man diese mit dem Versand, wird man vor Versand gewarnt
• O2 AIRMail nutzt nun GZIP als HTTP Compression, um den Versand über GPRS/EDGE zu beschleunigen
• Außerdem wurden einige Fehler und Probleme der vorigen Versionen beseitigt

Das Tool unterstützte seit der ALPHA v0.3 folgende Features:

• SMS-Versand
• Speicherung der Daten (verschlüsselt)
• Flash SMS
• Anonyme SMS
• eigene Absenderkennung
• Telefonbuchzugriff
• SMS an mehrere Teilnehmer
• Applikation heißt jetzt O2 Airmail
• Funktioniert nun im Landscape mode
• Benutzt nun den internen Apache HTTP Client für die Connections
• Neues Hintergrundbild mit Android Logo
• Neues Anwendungs Icon
• Große Codeumstrukturierung um den Speicher zu entlasten und die Performance zu erhöhen.
• Durch das Austauschen des Hintergrundbildes und der Nutzung internen Systemicons konnte auch die Dateigröße vermindert werden (vorher 93kb – jetzt 63kb)
• Kleine Änderungen an der Benutzeroberfläche
• Löscht nun das Versendeformular nach einem erfolgreichen Versand der Nachricht
• Wurde nun auch auf Android 1.6 (Donut) getestet
• Unnötigen Webseitenaufruf beim Versand rausgeschmissen
• Bug beim Ersetzen des Masterpassworts gefixed

Vielen Dank auch an alle, die Probleme und auch neue Ideen auf der Projektseite gemeldet haben! Ich rufe weiterhin zu einer aktiven Teilname auf. Diese “Issue-List” dient mir als To-Do, um neue Features ins Produkt zu bringen und gleichzeitig auch gefunden Fehler zu beseitigen. Hier könnt ihr euch subscriben, um immer zu sehen, was mit eurer Meldung passiert ist, bzw. ob sie vielleicht schon gefixed wurde und in der nächsten Version verfügbar sein wird. Ich habe hier schon viele gute Ideen bekommen, von denen ich einige auf jeden Fall umsetzen werde.

Download O2 Airmail

As this is an application for German O2 customers, I will post this entry in German only.

Nachdem Version 0.3 bereits 90 Mal heruntergeladen wurde, wurde heute Version 0.4 released. Und glaubt mir, diese Version hat es in sich. Version 0.41, kommt nun mit den bislang größten Änderungen seit dem Release ALPHA v0.1. Des Weiteren hat die Applikation nun auch einen Namen (O2 AIRMail) und ein Logo. Ersten Berichten zufolge funktioniert nun auch der Versand im GPRS-Netz – von der GPRS-Geschwindigkeit her mal abgesehen. Grundsätzlich wurde hierfür ziemlich stark am Kern gecodet, weshalb es gut sein kann, dass sich hier Fehler eingeschlichen haben, die ich noch nicht entdeckt habe. Diese bitte ich zu melden – wo das geht steht unten.

Update: Ab heute ist das Tool auch im Android Market zu finden. Also könnt ihr dieses nun auch direkt von dort ziehen. Updates und neue Versionen landen selbstverständlich auch dort.

Ich brauche jetzt natürlich immernoch ein paar Leute, die a) Lust haben das Tool zu testen und b) unter Umständen mitcoden wollen (Projekt läuft unter GPLv3).

Wie gesagt, das Tool ist noch sehr jung (Alpha v0.41), deshalb kann es noch gut sein, dass hier und da etwas nicht richtig tut. Deshalb wäre es cool, wenn ihr auf der Projektseite Fehler/Ideen melden würdet:

Da es momentan immer noch das Problem gibt, dass O2 es seinen Kunden nicht erlaubt die Frei-SMS, die bei einem Internetpack mitkommen, unterwegs zu nutzen, habe ich mich entschiedenen eine Anwendung zu entwickeln, die genau dies ermöglicht. Generell werdet ihr nichts von der O2 Weboberfläche sehen, denn die Applikation wird all diese Arbeit für euch übernehmen. So könnt ihr unterwegs nun von euren Frei-SMS Gebrauch machen. Diese werden euch natürlich immer angezeigt. In der Version 0.3 werden schon grundlegende 02 Features unterstützt.

Das Tool unterstützt aktuell folgende Features:

• SMS-Versand
• Speicherung der Daten (verschlüsselt)
• Flash SMS
• Anonyme SMS
• eigene Absenderkennung
• Telefonbuchzugriff
• SMS an mehrere Teilnehmer

Wichtig: Ein “Know-Issue” ist der Fakt, dass der Versand unter GPRS nicht richtig funktioniert (unter 3G/3,5G/Wifi läuft es problemlos). Ich werde den Core vor dem Beta release noch auf den internen Apache HTTP Client umbauen, demnach könnte sich das Problem dann erledigt haben. Leider kann ich das alles nur auf dem Emulator testen, der immer am Wifi hängt.

Internet Explorer

After running some smoke tests on different browsers (Firefox 3.x (Mac, Linux), Opera 9.x (Mac, Linux) and Safari 4.x (Mac)) I’ve decided to remove the beta status. There have been some minor changes that I had to make to my CSS files to display everything correctly in all of the mentioned browsers, but it’s done now. Of course it might be that you find some more errors, but don’t hesitate to contact me and to tell me what you’ve found.

You’ve maybe realized that I did not test any Internet Explorer version. This is because I don’t have no Windows installation or whatsoever to test this website with. I also don’t want to re-edit my CSS/HTML files to not match CSS/HTML standards.

Have fun and remember: Whenever you find a bug – tell me.

Maemo OS

According to a newspaper article in the “Financial Times Germany” Nokia has plans to move from their SymbianOS to an OS called “Maemo” as their standard operating system for cell phones – finally. Maemo is an operating system for the Nokia Internet Tablet line of handheld computers. It was originally named “Internet Tablet OS” and is similar to many handheld operating systems, and features a “Home” screen—the central point from which all applications and settings are accessed. Maemo is based on Debian GNU/Linux and draws much of its GUI, frameworks, and libraries from the Gnome project – so in my opinion it is pretty Android-like but also a good step into the future. Nokia needs something new in their consumer smartphone product palette. There have been rumors that Nokia has planed to release a phone with the Android OS installed, but these rumors have been denied by Nokia with the following words: “There is no truth to this story whatsoever. It is a well known fact that Symbian is our platform of choice for smartphones.” I’m not so sure about that phrase anymore.

This is what I think about that:

Nokia 7650

When the Nokia 7650 was released in 2002 they have really changed the (smart-) phone market. Featuring a built-in camera, an enhanced user interface, and a large 4096 color display, the Nokia 7650 opened up new perspectives in personal communications. And yes, this was the first Symbian Series60 OS, which could be used by nearly everyone (the Nokia Communicator (the brick) was way too big for private use). The other good thing about this OS was the fact, that if you had a Visual C++ license you were able to download the Symbian SDK and to start coding for your device – yes, I developed applications for that first Series60 device. Starting with that device, Nokia has had a huge success and finally bought Symbian in 2008.

Seven years have gone by now and I still do think that neither buying Symbian nor keeping the Symbian OS as their standard platform was a good idea, because the smartphone market had changed rapidly after Apple had released its iPhone. People wanted to have huge touch screen displays, multi-touch features and slim designs – these are all features that apple did not have by that time as they had their focus on MP3 and GPS.

Symbian OS

So they lost market share, while Apple sold more and more iPhones – I have to let you know that I don’t like the iPhone at the moment due to its limited features and its price – but that doesn’t matter right now. Apple also released an SDK with a huge API and also offered an APP Store. Nokia had that as well, but not as comfortable and huge like Apple and with less professional (looking) applications. Let’s compare the market share of the 4th quarter 2008 with the one of the 4th quarter 2007. Nokia lost more than 10% (2007: 50.9% – 2008: 40.8%) while Apple gained more than 5% (2007: 5.2 – 2008: 10.7) – Source: Gartner (March 2009). The winners were Research In Motion with their Blackberry and Apple with their iPhone.

Symbian OS became quite old school. The applications became even more old school as well the design. The only thing that I really love about Symbian is that everything works they way it should – that’s why I still use my Nokia e51. Great cell phone, but old school as well. To get to the people and to gain back their market share they definitely need something new… something that is not old school – something fresh – and therefore a new strategy! Let’s wait and see what Nokia does with the Meamo operating system – I can’t await to play little with it – although I might probably have an Android phone then.
